Ryan ST-A

This 1/5 scale Ryan ST-A was built from Sig plans over a one year period. It is powered by a K & B 0.61 engine and incorporates working flaps, ailerons, elevators, rudder, and throttle. At the club meeting the final details of the exhaust system had not been completed, but the plan is to install a manifold to discharge the exhaust from the scale exhaust stacks. The model is patterned after a Ryan seen at the 1996 EAA convention at Oshkosh, Wisconsin. There are many differences between the model and the Sig plans. For instance, the landing gear is a pair of Robart sprung struts that allow scale operation of the gear. Flying wires are built up from flat steel material and brass threadded couplers split and soldered in place. Ryan logo decals and all graphics in the photo were hand cut from trim film. The paint job was done using F & M Stits process materials. The red and white contrast required masking all trim twice. The colors are butted, not overlapped. The final touch is the operating seat belt buckle in the scale cockpit. The model was built to look as closely like the real aircraft as I was able to make it.
