Flights of Fancy - 2002

Fallbrook - July 6, The San Diego Aerospace Museum held one of its kickoff events for the Aerosummer Program for kids. The Aerosummer program runs throughout the summer season and provides aerospace oriented education activities in the form of summer camps.

Students test fly their models on the runway at the Palomar RC Field.

'Flights of Fancy' is a one day camp for 6th to 8th grade students featuring aviation modeling classes. It was held at the Palomar RC Model Airport located at Highway 76 and I-15. Students went through some very intensive training in all phases of aviation modeling activities. Every student was provided the materials and tools to build a powered model using stick and tissue and plans. The models were later flown in a contest to see who could stay aloft the longest - young Jarrett Silberberg, from Honolulu, HI - won the contest and was awarded a new RC model kit for his efforts.

Students went on to fly model RC planes - using the fleet of 11 RC trainer models maintained by the Palomar RC Flyers Club. Instruction is provided to the youngsters via dual controls so that the student gets to learn the required controls without danger of crashing the models.

Model helicopter flying was also included with many awesome demonstrations of model helicopters plus hands-on time for the students using computer-based simulators.

Finally, a technical class was offered for students to learn the control technology and mechanics of model aircraft construction and assembly.

This weekend, 52 students soaked up all this model aviation knowledge and as a bonus received an RC model kit, provided by Hitec RCD, of Poway, CA - an enthusiastic supporter of model aviation education.
